What is an IP Address?
An IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a unique numerical label assigned to every device connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication. Think of it as a digital home address for your computer or smartphone, allowing data to find its way across the vast internet to the correct recipient.
How IP Lookup Works
When you perform an IP lookup, our tool queries a massive database of network allocations maintained by Regional Internet Registries (RIRs). This allows us to identify which Internet Service Provider (ISP) owns that specific block of addresses and what geographic location (city, region, and country) they have assigned to it.
IPv4 vs IPv6
- IPv4: The traditional format (e.g., 192.168.1.1). It uses 32-bit addresses, allowing for about 4.3 billion unique combinations. Due to the internet's growth, these addresses are mostly exhausted.
- IPv6: The modern successor (e.g., 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334). It uses 128-bit addresses, providing an almost infinite number of unique addresses for future devices.
Privacy and IP Tracking
While an IP address can pinpoint your general city and ISP, it usually doesn't reveal your exact house address or identity to the general public. However, websites and services use your IP to customize content, detect fraud, and enforce regional restrictions. Using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) can hide your real IP by routing your traffic through a server in a different location.
